Deafinitely Theatre’s latest production, Barrier(s), was centred in the lived experiences within LGBTQIA+ communities and the complexities of identity, language and access. The work opened up vital conversations about how British Sign Language reflects - and sometimes struggles to reflect - the evolving language around gender, sexuality and intersectional identities.

This full-day CPD training will explore current LGBTQIA+ terminology in BSL, creating space for discussion, reflection and shared learning. Together, we will examine how interpreters can work more confidently, accurately and sensitively when interpreting LGBTQIA+ experiences, recognising gaps, variations and ongoing developments in language use.

The training is aimed at Registered and Trainee BSL Interpreters. Participants will receive a CPD certificate awarding 6 CPD points upon successful completion of the training.

calum medlock

I’m Calum Medlock (he/him), a deaf gay professional working in communications and accessibility, currently based at UCL’s Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL).

I’ve been involved in a couple of projects and workshops that opened up discussion around LGBTQIA+ experiences, terminology, and representation in deaf contexts. This includes supporting a project expanding the BSL Glossary through Deaf Rainbow UK, where I helped recruit participants for workshops, carried out data collection, designed forms, and updated published glossary content on the website. I also led an LGBTQ+ terms and meanings workshop at Deafab 2022.

I previously served as a Trustee of Deaf Rainbow UK, where I redesigned the charity’s website, created digital materials to support community outreach, and helped organise events including AGMs and Deafab.

Outside of work, I’m married and live with my husband and our chihuahua twins. I enjoy gaming, spending time with friends, and getting out and about when I can.
